The Carbone Lorraine
group Braking division is part of the "Advanced
Systems and Materials" department. Two types
of friction materials are put together there :
- sintered metal materials,
- carbon/carbon components.
The Carbon/Carbon composites are mainly used in
aircraft braking systems. They allow the absorption
of energy released during emergency braking (An
Airbus at 320 Km/h has to stop within a distance
of 1200 meters) and operate at more than 1600°
C.
Carbone Lorraine is the main supplier for the Airbus
A321 Range.

 |
| In Motorcycle racing
activity, Carbone Lorraine offers a carbon/carbon
range for braking equipment. Both discs and brake
pads are made from carbon/carbon. This material
is also use in Formula 1 (brakes and clutch). In
these cases, it combines low weight with strong
braking capacity. |
 |
| Sintered materials
have a more important application range :
TGV brakes, high-speed
locomotives and freight trains are made in sintered
metal because of the heavy mass high speeds involved
(a TGV at 320 km/h has to stop within a distance
of 3000 meters).
|
 |
| Carbone Lorraine
is also present on the aeronautic field with brakes
for Airbus A300, A310, Mirage F1, Tigers and Sikorsky
helicopters. Sintered Metal materials is also used
in the braking systems of military vehicles such
as the AMX30 and AMX 10 tanks. |
 |
| Because of strong
braking energy, industrial brakes for windmills,
winchs or mines require sintered materials. |
 |
| More recently, Carbone
Lorraine has developed a complete range of Brake
pads for racing cars (rally, Nascar). These products
are already used by some official teams in World
Rally championship. |
 |
| The last family
of carbone Lorraine sintered metal products is motorcycle
brake pads. This material offers an incomparable
braking quality : durability, power, feeling, and
efficiency in wet weather. Each product is tailored
to a specific application. |
